About Verlaine Crawford

Verlaine Crawford The evolution of my art has indeed been a journey of discovery - expanding and absorbing a variety of art forms leading to the development my own personal process to create an impactful image on the canvas.

This process can take several weeks or even a month before the final painting is accomplished. It begins with a careful study of color and the geometry of the composition and how that flow of color and light will illuminate, define and project the character, form and emotion of the figures in the scene.

The initial phases include making many small sketches to discover the harmonic patterns of color and geometry to be used as well as the flow of light and shadow. And then the image is sketched on the canvas and the painting process begins.

Blending the colors and watching them take form in a sensuous woman resting in a room or sitting in a garden transports me into a realm of beauty and harmony. Layer upon layer of glazes and highlights add to the depth of color and luminosity, following the leadership of the great artists of the past.

My focus and intention is to share my passion with you. I desire to create a window of a beautiful scene that will transport you to another reality where you can experience the feeling of that time and place.

I began learning about art in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where I attended high school. Each day I would walk through the many galleries and was able to learn from the international artists, such as Roberto Lupetti and Yuan, who made their homes in this lovely European-type village south of San Francisco.

At the University of California I studied marketing as well as art, photography and graphic design, which led me into the world of marketing and advertising. Over the years I worked with a variety of companies from hospitality to high technology. In the 1990's I authored an award-winning, self-help book and was invited to speak across the U.S. and in Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Throughout my travels, I was studying art. In each country I visited countless museums and galleries, digesting the colors, techniques and content of the artists of each nationality. I was influenced by dance of color and light of the impressionists. I learned simplicity from the Asian artists and the contrast of light and dark from the Dutch masters.

I absorbed the complexity of form and composition, the iridescent color, texture and form of the classical artists of France and Italy. I spent long hours at the Louvre and Musee d'Orsay in Paris, the Uffizi in Florence and the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum in Rome. And I was honored to be mentored by a private, master artist who shared his skills and ability to see so vividly with me.

My art is in the private collections of individuals in the U.S., Europe and the Far East. I am interested in working with agents, interior designers and galleries and enjoy doing commissions and portraits.
